Jasper, Dubois County, Indiana - www.duboiscounty.org Located in south central Indiana, Jasper and the surrounding communities have been recognized internationally for the manufacture of quality wood office and home furniture. Much of the raw material is cut from the oak, walnut, hickory and poplar forests in and around Dubois County. Jasper is home to Kimball International, Masterbrand Cabinets, Jasper Office Furniture, Jasper Desk Company, Jasper Seating Co., Jasper Chair Co., Inwood Office / Furniture Co. and Indiana Furniture Industries among others. Jasper Engines and Transmissions, Inc. also enjoys national renown. In Ferdinand, Best Chairs and Mobel, Inc. are major employers and Huntingburg is home to Styline Industries and DMI Furniture, Inc.
Next door to the Verkamp Inn is the site of the original Cumberland Presbyterian Church, the first log church built in Jasper in 1830. In 1838, the Reverend Joseph Kundek, a missionary priest, arrived in Dubois County and bought tracts of land which he platted to form the core of several communities in the area. He advertized in Europe and cities up the Ohio River, encouraging German Catholics to float down the Ohio and settle in the area. This in turn influenced the founding of the St. Meinrad Abbey and Monastery of Immaculate Conception in Ferdinand. The many early settlers who came to Dubois County were industrious wood craftsmen and farmers and their influence and legacy is still felt today.
Dubois County traditionally ranks at the top of Indiana Counties with the lowest unemployment rate which speaks to the work ethic of the people who inhabit its communities.
Dubois County schools have been recognized state wide for their academic, extra curricular, athletic and other achievements. In 1993, Jasper was ranked among the 100 best small towns in America, ranking fourth in the per capita income category. |
